Having to train your characters in weapons they don't innately know how to wield in World of Warcraft Classic can be a bit of a weird concept to anyone who only started WoW during or later on Cataclysm. Weapon training is a thing, though, and y'all've got to get used to it in WoW Classic.
Weapon trainers and the weapon skill system were removed in Calamity, just both are back in full strength in WoW Archetype. With this system, players will have to travel to weapon trainers to learn to use weapon types their class cannot use by default.
Additionally, to learn how to use a new weapon type effectively, you'll accept to whack on mobs to increase your proficiency with information technology.
It's recommended you try to get your proficiency up in weapons you lot intend to apply at endgame earlier rather than later, as the most constructive way to level up your weapon skills is to just machine-attack enemies. It takes a heck of a long time to become to ~300 in a weapon skill if you start with a new weapon type belatedly.

A Couple of Things to Note:
- Some races start with unlike weapons in certain classes than others
